Komatsu Ltd. (hereafter “Komatsu”) (President and CEO: Hiroyuki Ogawa) has purchased land adjacent to the Ibaraki Plant and constructed a new plant, the Seaside Plant, to perform pre-shipment maintenance of dump trucks and other self-propelled vehicles and packaging of shipment parts, as part of “the Enhance corporate resilience” initiative, one of the three pillars of growth strategies in its mid-term management plan. Komatsu held an opening ceremony in June of this year and began operations in July.
[Seaside Plant]
At the Ibaraki Plant, Komatsu produces medium-sized and large rigid-frame dump trucks, articulated dump trucks, and medium- sized and large wheel loaders. Komatsu exports about 90% of products produced there. Located adjacent to the Hitachinaka port area, the Plant features no trucking of export products from port roads to the docks, as the products are virtually finished and can be driven. Since the Ibaraki Plant was established in 2007, its production of dump trucks and other products for overseas markets has been increasing, albeit amid demand fluctuation, and the lack of an area for pre-shipment maintenance of products has been a major issue for the Plant. As the newly built Seaside Plant utilizes a new site on the shipping flow line from the assembly plant to Hitachinaka Port, it will help its substantially reduce lead-time from the assembly line off to shipping.
In addition, when shipping vehicles after maintenance and inspection, some parts may be disassembled according to shipping standards, and the packing work for those parts may be done outside of the Plant before shipping together with the vehicle. As the new Seaside Plant enables to package the parts inside the plant now, Komatsu is going cut down lead time and transportation costs through improved logistics. Komatsu is also working to reduce CO2 emissions and continuing its efforts to make Seaside Plant carbon neutral.
As part of its growth strategy for the mid-term management plan "DANTOTSU Value - Together, to 'The Next' for sustainable growth," Komatsu is working to achieve safe, highly productive, smart, and clean workplaces of the future. DANTOTSU Value is defined as customer value creation that generates a positive cycle of improvement of earnings and ESG resolutions. Through this DANTOTSU Value, Komatsu will strive to create new values in order to take steady steps forward to the next stage for the workplace of the future and pass on a sustainable future to the next generation.
