With the planet

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are international goals unanimously adopted in a resolution called the 2030 Agenda by member countries at the United Nations Summit in September 2015. Serving as a shared blueprint for prosperity for people and the planet, SDGs target the achievement of a sustainable world by 2030. Komatsu is aggressively promoting the achievement of SDGs.

Komatsu and the environment

For the realization of a sustainable society, we have clearly defined basic policies for environmental conservation, which serve as guidelines for Group-wide business activities and our promotion of environmental conservation activities.

Relationship between business activities and the environment

While assessing the environmental impact of our business activities, formulating medium- and long-term objectives, and pursuing initiatives to mitigate environmental impact, Komatsu will continue to provide our customers with ever higher value-added products and services.

Responding to climate change

At Komatsu, our aim is the reduction of CO2 emissions generated not only from our operations, manufacturing, marketing, and provision of services, but also throughout our supply chain.

For the creation of a recycling-based society

Komatsu actively promotes and practices “Reman (remanufacturing)” in its business. This involves the removal of long-used components from machinery at customer sites , their thorough remanufacturing in our plants and return to market as virtually new  components. In addition to reducing waste in our production activities, Komatsu is pursuing “zero emission” measures in the recycling and utilization of any resulting waste. We have also made various improvements to our usage of water resources through initiatives to reduce and optimize water usage, thereby reducing the amount of new water input.

Environmental initiatives at sales and service companies

With the aim of safe, environmentally friendly operations in every facet of our business, our commitment to safety and the environment extends to our companies who pursue the marketing and servicing of Komatsu Group construction machinery and forklifts. Examples of other support include the establishment of an environment management system, on-site follow-up of the resulting improvements, and related training/education. Remote execution of the latter two was introduced following the outbreak of COVID-19.

Environmental Initiatives for sales and service companies

Our environmental risk management initiatives include: legal compliance with pollution prevention; chemical substance management and related pollution prevention measures; reduction of usage of substances of environmental concern and compliance with EU regulations for the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH); reduction of NOx and PM emissions from products; actions to counter water resource-related risks; overseas compliance and risk (CR) auditing; and holding environmental regional meetings.

Biodiversity initiatives

Recognizing the impact of our business activities on ecosystems, Komatsu has undertaken various initiatives to protect biodiversity wherever we operate in the world. With the establishment of Komatsu's "Declaration of Biodiversity" and "Biodiversity Guideline" in January 2011, Komatsu business units launched activities worldwide.
